Furoshiki size guide

How to choose a furoshiki size

The right furoshiki size depends on what you want to wrap.

A little extra cloth makes softer folds, easier knots, and a more generous gesture.

Furoshiki are measured by the width of the square cloth.

As a rule, choose a cloth that is roughly two to three times the width of the object you want to wrap.

Books, small boxes, lunch boxes, and single bottles

A useful everyday size for gifting. It wraps a book, a small box, a lunch box, or a single bottle with enough cloth left to tie a clean knot.

For many people, this is the best first furoshiki: generous enough to tie, simple enough to use often.

Medium boxes, larger books, clothing, and softer gift wraps

A little more room for softer folds and easier knots. Use it for a medium gift box, a larger book, a folded item of clothing, or a generous everyday wrap.

The extra cloth gives the wrapping a calmer shape.

Shoeboxes, larger gifts, clothing, bags, and carrying

A larger cloth for larger objects and practical use. It works well for a shoebox, a larger gift box, clothing, or as a light carrying cloth.

The extra fabric gives room for handles, fuller knots, and more relaxed wrapping.

Bulky objects, bags, picnics, storage, and home use

For bulky objects and practical carrying. Larger furoshiki can become a bag, a picnic cloth, a storage wrap, or a generous covering for the home.

Choose this size when the cloth needs to do more than wrap a single gift.

If you are unsure, choose a cloth with a little more room. The spare fabric becomes the knot, the handle, or the gesture.
